The Cell Phone Registration Deadline. If you have been scrambling to register your Mexican cell phone line before the June 30 cutoff, you can stand down. The government just announced a massive extension and a change to the rules. If you are on a monthly contract, you are completely off the hook and no longer need to register. If you use a pre-pay chip like most of us down here, you still have to link your number to your ID, but the deadline has been pushed. The new cutoff dates are staggered between August and December depending on the last digit of your phone number. The immediate panic is over, but you will want to check your provider’s website to see exactly when your specific number is up.
